    Zoom Meeting

We are going to continue to do Zoom meetings (until I can get Google non-profit set up)

The requirements that we should be working on for 1st and 2nd class require closer than 6 feet contact. There are modifications for 1st and 2nd class posted on the Google Classroom.

Again, pulling out of the announcement “”Parents should be surveyed and a majority of the parents in the Scouting unit must approve restoring in person activities.” We need to hear from parents before we can start in person meetings. We also have to have approval from our Charter Organization to resume meetings.

If you need the Zoom info, please email me. I can’t post on the blog because it isn’t secure.

    Email me – laura.tague@bsatroop821.org

    GSLAC Updates

    UNIT ACTIVITIES

As Scouting is local, the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America has left determining responses to COVID-19, the coronavirus pandemic up to local councils. This includes whether Scouting units can hold face-to-face Scout meetings, activities, events and trips as well as when those meetings may resume. Throughout this pandemic, our Council has made the health and safety of our Scouts, leaders, staff and their families its number one priority.

As local and state restrictions related to COVID-19 have been eased and extensive protocols have been put in place, we are now ready to ease the suspension of in person local unit meetings and activities under the following criteria;·

All local and state governments, both where the unit is chartered and where the meeting or activity is to take place must clearly permit the activity in terms of gathering size and ability to maintain proper social distancing. All of their and the Federal CDC guidelines must be followed for all phases of the meeting or activity (such as feeding, housing/tents, swimming etc.).·

Chartered organizations must approve in person activities and/or meetings prior to restoring them. Units should also consult with their chartered organization to determine the best path forward for the unit’s Scouting programs.·

Parents should be surveyed and a majority of the parents in the Scouting unit must approve restoring in person activities.·

All meetings and activities are to take place outdoors.

    SUMMER PROGRAM OPPORTUNITIES

We plan to continually evaluate our program offerings and policies related to COVID-19 on a daily basis and immediately communicate any changes and additions. In the meantime, please stay safe, follow recommended precautions and utilize the camp facilities and programs we’ve made available. They include Outdoor Family Camping, weekly challenges, camp kits and STEM projects. All details can be found on our website, http://www.stlbsa.org and our council Facebook page. As of June 3rd, all Illinois camp properties will be available for the Outdoor Family Experience!

TRAVELCDC guidelines state that traveling increases chances of getting and spreading COVID-19. Social distancing, also called “physical distancing,” means keeping space between people outside of the home. To practice social or physical distancing, a distance of at least 6 feet (about 2 arms’ length) needs to be maintained from other people. During travel, it is not always possible to follow this CDC guideline.

SCOUTFEST 2020 Once in a decade, the Greater St. Louis Area Council celebrates Scouting by hosting a major Scouting event in Forest park. More than 23,000 people preregistered to attend ScoutFest 2020 this October. Staff and volunteers have been working since 2017 to put together a first-class program with over 300 activities. As mentioned earlier, our council has made the health and safety of our Scouts, leaders, staff and their families our number one priority. Therefore, it is with great disappointment we announce the difficult decision to postpone ScoutFest2020 until October 1-3, 2021. By postponing the event, we can follow through on our promise to deliver a spectacular event with once-in-a-lifetime experiences for Scouts and families. All existing registrations will be automatically transferred to the 2021 date. Refunds are available for those who cannot attend the new date by request to scoutfest2020@scouting.org. We look forward to celebrating Scouting together in October 2021!

RANGER PROGRAMWe are happy to announce that the Ranger program, an exciting older scout program that has been enjoyed by scouts for decades, has been revised to be conducted in a socially distant and safe manner. It will take place over the course of three days at various backcountry locations at S bar F Scout Ranch. Scouts will live in outpost camps, carry all equipment necessary for camping, and walk portions of the Three Notch Trail. Scouts who are at least 14, or in their fourth summer camp, will enjoy this small group program. Scouts must be transported to and from camp in private vehicles containing household members only. BSA’s annual health and medical record will be required. We understand that physical exams may be difficult to obtain because of COVID-19. In light of COVID-19, guidance is being provided and will be in effect until August 31, 2020. For more information visit; https://stlbsa.org/ranger-program/

    Meeting Reminder and Summer information

As a reminder, we are having a virtual meeting at 7 pm tonight. I switched to Google meet. If you need the Meeting ID, please let me know. The information is on the Facebook Page

We do need to keep meeting until we hold elections. I am hoping there will be a time when they ease restrictions and we can have in-person meetings (with social distancing, face masks and hand sanitizer).

GSLAC has announced they are planning alternate Summer Activities. We are also working on Eagle Trail Camp, be it virtual or a modified day camp type experience. Below is what GSLAC has planned.

I need input from parents on what their Scouts would want to do. Do they want to do a Zoom Summer Camp from outside of St. Louis? I have seen several and have the information.

Here are the programs:Outdoor Family Experience – Family camping at all properties, families bring their own supplies and meals, and enjoy the wonders of camp!

1st Year Scouts BSA Kit – Boxed activities to give young scouts a leg up on reaching their First Class rank, basic supplies and online resources will be a part of this experience.

Ranger Program – The classic ranger overnight camping experience for Scouts BSA – two full weeks and half week camp experiences.

Merit Badge Courses- Coming soon in June and July, in-person and online, courses for scouts. Information coming soon on the p-program offerings and pricing.

Virtual STEM Fair- Scouts will submit projects related to science, technology, engineering, and math then participate in a virtual fair judged by real STEM professional. There will be a zoom celebration to announce winners on July 24th!

    Scouting Updates 5/18/2020

Greater St. Louis Area Council sent out an email today. “Given current state and local government restrictions and CDC guidelines, the Greater St. Louis Area Council is continuing the suspension of face-to-face Scout meetings, activities, events and trips until further notice.”

I am waiting for guidelines from the OA regarding the camping requirements for our first year Scouts.

I am asking that if you find any virtual/Zoom Merit Badges to post in the comments. I am not actively looking for these opportunities.

If Scouts take any virtual/Zoom Merit Badges, it is the responsibility of the **SCOUT**, not the parent to let me know. It is the **SCOUTS** responsibility to make sure that I get a blue card from the counselor or that I know to link the Scout with the Merit Badge Counselor. I WILL NOT take texts from parents. Scouts that are 6th Grade and above should be able to email me from their district email. When emailing, Scouts need to add their parent.

I am the MB Counselor for Citizenship in the Community, Nation and World, Communication and Family Life.

Greater St. Louis Area Council is opening the camps to Families. To register, click the link. https://stlbsa.org/blog/2020/05/13/family-camping-summer-2020/?fbclid=IwAR2ip9SY_yM3pusJmcsgvZDnmeARiLt0jwxkjc1FzlBjQQVDaudeLx2wJpU
(Disclaimer – while they are allowing Family Camping, they are not allowing Troop camping.)

    Kia Kima Update

Below is the announcement from Kia Kima Scout Reservation canceling Summer Camp. They are offering an alternate option, but there are no details as of yet. Once we have details of the their alternate and cost, we will post them.

At this time, Greater St. Louis Area Council has also canceled summer camp for 2020.

We recognize that the Scouts need to camp. It is the backbone of the program. However, until we have further guidance from GSLAC, we can not make plans. One of the biggest concerns is social distancing and where would we camp.

    Summer Camp 2020 Updates (5/12/20)

All in-person summer programs at Kia Kima Scout Reservation have been suspended for the 2020 season. We are still working diligently to offer quality programming to all of our Scouts. You can read the details here; we will share more information about summer opportunities soon!

Scouts BSA Resident Camp Suspended (5/12/2020)

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to shape the new Kia Kima 2020 Experience.

After carefully considering the risks and rewards of operating our traditional camp this summer, including consulting with doctors, public health officials, attorneys, insurance advisers, food-safety experts, professional cleaning experts, and others, we have made the decision that we simply cannot operate a traditional in-person week-long summer camp at Kia Kima this year.

Instead, we will be providing you with a new modified summer experience that blends virtual experiences with some limited in-person instruction along with kits to assist your Scouts with advancement and adventure. We are calling this new format the “Kia Kima 2020 Experience.”

The Kia Kima 2020 Experience is committed to continuing to fulfill the promises of Scouting to all the youth we serve and to the adults who guide them. This enhanced version includes video instruction by some of your favorite Kia Kima Staff, Camp in a Box (these are program kits which will include everything you need to complete your choice of badges plus a special-edition Kia Kima 2020 shirt and patch), online campfires, virtual tours, an online trading post, health and safety-compliant outdoor instruction with certified staff at locations in the Chickasaw Council service area, and much more to come! We are currently building the complete platform for your use. The possibilities before us in the current situation and the future are endless—imagine at-home instruction prior to an in-person class or training! Participants could maximize on the offerings in an outdoor classroom with less of a time commitment; the extra time could then be spent building lifelong friendships, exploring the great outdoors, and so much more.

The fee structure for this season will be based on a menu of possible choices and will be designed to ensure that the program is accessible to as many Scouts as possible. If you have already made payments toward your stay at camp, please let us know if you would like to apply them to the new hybrid program mentioned above, or if you would like to transfer them to the 2021 season. If you need to request a refund, please contact us at your convenience.

We will be offering numerous virtual opportunities this summer, and we are working to provide limited in-person experiences in and around the Chickasaw Council service area. If you would like to assist us in offering these opportunities, please let us know.

Thank you for all you do for Scouting! We look forward to a return to the Ozarks in 2021!

    Troop Meeting and OA Elections

I have scheduled Zoom Meetings for: May 14, May 21, and May 28. Meeting time is 7 pm. It is important that the Scouts join the meetings.

The primary agenda for the meeting will be to discuss the OA election process and candidates. At this time, while I have not heard the exact date, it should be May 28 or June 4.

Information on the Zoom meeting is in the Google Classroom. If a Scout needs the code, please email me at laura.e.tague@sbcglobal.net

    OA Elections / Troop Meetings

As we get closer to Summer Camp, I have been working with the Gravios Trail OA Advisor on how to have OA elections.

“You must have at least two virtual meetings with your Troop to inform them of the selected election date/time and to let them know who is eligible to be on the ballot. There must be a given opportunity for candidates to discuss their support for being elected into the OA.”

I have scheduled Zoom Meetings for: May 14, May 21, and May 28. It is important that the Scouts join the meetings.

The Scouts will need to use a device that is not the School District Chromebook. I have posted the Zoom information on the Troop Google Classroom and the Troop FB page. (This blog is not secure.)
