    Summer Camp Reminders

We will pack the Trailer for Summer Camp on Friday, July 5th at 7 pm. (This is MANDATORY due to space in vehicles) The Summer Camp Packing List is on previous posts.

Annual Medical Forms (Parts A,B, and C) MUST be turned in on July 5th. Also, at this time, ALL Scouts and adults health forms are expired. If your Scout isn’t going to Summer Camp, I still need Part A and B. http://stlbsa.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/680-001_ABC.pdf

After the trailer is packed, we will have a brief meeting.

If Scouts are or have attended STEM Camp, they need to let me know upon completion the dates. This counts toward rank, OA membership, and the Camping Merit Badge. Also, if Scouts need Merit Badge cards for STEM Camp, they need to let me know prior to the start of camp..

If there are any questions, please contact me. laura.e.tague@sbcglobal.net

    Philmont 2020

    Hello Troop 821,

At the parents’ meeting last Thursday, we announced the BIG news about next summer! Troop 821 has a 12-day expedition slot for the BSA’s Philmont Scout Ranch. The expedition starts on Sunday, June 21st, 2020 and finishes on Friday, July 3rd, 2020. The expedition will be a back-country hike through Philmont’s mountainous wilderness.  This expedition is not the troop’s week-long summer camp. The troop will still attend summer camp at a yet to be determined out-of-council BSA camp.

The expedition slot will remain available to us until mid-July 2019. To keep the slot, we need commitments from at least 3 more scouts by July 5th, 2019.   This commitment will require the $100 down payment payable to troop 821 by July 5th.

The expedition requires 2-3 leaders and 5 to 6 scouts. 3 leaders (Micky Beadle, Chris Burford, and I) and 3 scouts have signed up. If  3 more scouts join the crew, then we can “lock-in” the reservation.

Please look over the following information and talk to your son about going to Philmont. Be sure the dates do not interfere with other commitments (sports, camps, family trips, etc). The fees are non-refundable. I have a plan which could reduce our groups financial risk, but there will still be a risk of losing the fees paid.

    Scout Requirements

    • Scouts need to be 14 years old OR 13 years old and completed 8th grade by 6/21/2020.
    • Philmont strictly enforces the height/weight requirements for youth and adults to benefit the health and safety of participants. Click here to view the Philmont Risk Advisory/Height & Weight Requirements.
    • Scouts should be physically fit enough to carry 35 to 50 pounds of gear, food and water each day on the hike.

    What to expect:

    • About Philmont: https://www.philmontscoutranch.org/about/
    • Training and conditioning for the expedition – Each participant will be required to train on their own time and participate in weekend group hikes in preparation of the expedition.
    • Gear – Each Scout and Leader will be responsible for bringing their own gear. We will review all gear requirements as we prepare over the next 12 months.
    • Transportation to Philmont – We take the train from Kirkwood, MO on 6/20/20 to Raton, NM and return to Kirkwood on 7/4/20. We will take a bus to and from base camp.
    • Expedition Itinerary – The camp offers over 35 different hiking itineraries. The scouts will choose one that best meets their expectations prior to arriving at camp.
    • The Expedition – The crew will stay at base camp the first night then hit the trail on day two. The crew will stick to the itinerary for the hike and return on day 13. The crew will leave for home on day 14. Food and water will be provided to the crew while on expedition.

    Estimated total cost per person:

    $1025   12-Day Trek ($100 Deposit/$462.50 Sept2019/$462.50 Feb2019)
$  280    Round trip Train ticket fee (estimate)
    $    45    Bus fare
$  150    Travel meals, souvenirs, etc
    ———
    $1500    Estimated total

Please call/text me at 314-443-1658 or email me at waelterl@gmail.com if your son will like to join the expedition or if you have any questions. We only have until July 5th to confirm our reservation.

        Meggan,
I will add Will to the list. If we have 7-8 scouts sign up then we will need 1 more adult leader. I will put you down as the 4th leader.

    Summer Camp

Tonight was the parent meeting for Summer Camp.

Pack the Trailer on July 5th– Admin Lot @ 7 pm

Leave for Camp: Meet at 11:15 am on July 7th for an 11:30 am sharp departure.

Scouts must be wearing Class A Uniform Shirt Eat lunch prior to leaving.

Dinner will be the first meal served at camp.

What to pack in the trailer: All personal gear needed for the week. Packing list is in the leader guide. http://stlbsa.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/S-bar-F-Complete-UoS-edited.pdf

We are going to Camp Gamble. Scouts need to bring Fork, knife, and spoon.

ALL Health Forms (A, B, and C) must be current and turned in on 7/5.

    What to bring on Sunday

Medications – Hand to Mrs. Tague at departure.

Fill out the medication form on July 5. Medications include any “as needed” like Tylenol/Alive or Tums. If a Scout is on ADHD medications during the school year to help with focusing, they should be on them for Summer Camp. These are classes where the Scouts are expected to focus and listen to the instructor.

Backpack with swimming suit and towel and Merit Badge Books and workbooks. From experience, it is best to use an old backpack to carry belongings during camp rather than a string bag.

There will not be room in cars for things you forgot to pack in your bag. Make one last check of your packing list before bringing it to the trailer.

    Mail

    Scout’s Name and Troop 821

    Camp Gamble

    Campsite: Weisman

    S bar F Scout Ranch

    Knob Lick, MO 63651

    Merit Badges

The prerequisites are listed for EACH Merit Badge. It is the responsibility of the Scout to have any prerequisites completed and to ask the Scoutmaster(s) for anything needed.

Scouts should have the following for Summer Camp·

    Merit Badge Book·

    Merit Badge Workbook – Meritbadge.org·

    Paper· Pen or pencils

MoneyIf you wish the adults to hold the money, it will be placed in a lock box. Bring in an envelope when we pack the trailer. There is no specific amount of money a Scout should bring to camp, but on the average, Scouts spend between $25 and $40, depending on the purchase of supplies for merit badges. (Allow for snacks and a camp T-shirt.)

Cell Phones and Electronics: Cell phones and electronics (including MP3 players) are not permitted at Summer Camp. If a Scout chooses to have electronics for the car trip to S-F, they must be left in the vehicle or locked in the Troop Trailer. This is due to not having a place to charge any electronics and the nature of the tents. It will rain during the week and things will get wet. The Troop is not responsible for any ruined cell phones/electronics.

Parent Night: Parents are invited to visit camp after 5 p.m. on Thursday evening, when they may bring a picnic dinner (we will need to know who is bringing dinner for their Scout for food count) and attend the Order of the Arrow call-out ceremony. Visitors need to plan on parking in the main parking lot and walking to their campsite and the OA ceremony area. Transportation is available for those needing assistance.

Pictures: We will post pictures as we can and internet availability. We have the Scouts class schedule and will do our best to visit the Merit Badge classes that are on Gamble. Please be respectful if you repost on your own FB page if there are other Scouts in the background.

Snacks/Extra FoodPlease do not send your Scout with snacks or extra food. Any items bought at the Trading Post and not eaten will be stored on the Troop Trailer. This is due to the rather tame raccoons and skunks at S-F.

    BSA BEST Survey

Our Troop has been asked to participate in a survey on Scouting. The information that was emailed to me is below. The survey will come to the Parent’s email. Please ask your Scout the questions. I felt that it was too invasive and divulging of private information to provide the Scout’s email. Together, we can improve the program for our Scouts.

Thank you for being a part of the BSA Building Evidence in Scouting Together (BEST) Study. Your voluntary contributions to this study are vital for BSA to learn more about how to support adult volunteers and youth development in Scouting today.
It is your troop’s turn to begin the first survey of the three online surveys for the BSA BEST study! In the next two weeks, the following will occur:
You will receive a packet that will include materials for Scouts and their parents about the Scout survey.
We will email Scouts (who provided an email address) links to the Scout survey.
We will email you and any Assistant Scoutmasters involved links to the Scouter survey.
Participating Scouts, Scoutmasters, and Assistant Scoutmasters can earn a three-part BEST Study patch!
Each Scouter and Scout registered for the study will be asked to complete three surveys over the course of this study.
For each survey, those who complete the survey will receive one segment of the patch.
Scouters and Scouts who complete all three of their surveys over the course of the study will have earned the complete patch!
These patches can only be earned through this study – just 11% of BSA Troops were selected across the country, so it is quite exclusive.
In addition, if you and 50% of your Scouts complete this first survey, we will email you a $25 Scout Shop gift card code for your troop, which can be used either online at scoutshop.org or at any National Scout Shop near you.
Participation is completely voluntary. You and anyone in your troop can withdraw at any time.

Summer Meetings – See below Car wash Information

June 1 – Pack / Troop Car wash. From Rob Kirk – (Some of this information is directed toward the Pack.)

Hey all don’t forget next Saturday June 1st is our 1st fund raising car wash of the year.

A few things about the car wash:

*Be at Affton high school at 8:30 am if you are coming early to help set up otherwise show up when you can. If staying till the end plan on helping to clean up. This also a rain or shine event unless there is severe weather in the area.

    * if you have any hoses, buckets sponges or any car wash supplies please consider bringing them. We mainly need hoses and sprayers

    * scouts will earn camp funds for based on the hours they work during the time the car wash is open (9am to 3pm or when we have no traffic anymore). Please try to work in hour increments only as it’s easier for me to calculate.

    * please bring something to drink and eat/snack on.

    * the school will not be open for restrooms so we have parents typical go down to the 7-11 or another nearest house or establishment for rest room breaks.

    * Wear your swim suit. You will get wet! Between washing cars, scouts can rest or play in the water.

*and most of all let’s have fun. The adults know it’s for a fund raiser so they dont expect their car to be perfect but as the cub scout motto goes, do your best.

*and since I feel the scouts are a bit more mature than the cub scouts they can be dropped off. Scout parents may stay if they like.

SUMMER CAMPAll Health Forms are Due by the June 20 Parent Meeting. Parts A, B, and C are mandatory, required by Council. It is required that Part C be filled out by the participant’s Doctor. This is a fillable PDF once it is downloaded. http://stlbsa.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/680-001_ABC.pdf
