Well it took me over the weekend to process what happened Thursday night.  The words that come to mind were surprised, honored and humbled.

Words can’t express the emotions I felt that night.  Although the lack of words might have given it away considering it’s really pretty hard for me to be speechless.

Starting with the time and effort it took to submit all the paperwork needed for the Merit Award.  Again I was truly blown away and thank you all for for considering me and for the effort put forth in submitting it.  It is truly an honor to be presented with it by you all!!

Then we got home and Cindy and I read the card and went through all the gifts that were inside it!!! Oh my goodness!!!  Totally not necessary.  But from the bottom of my heart and Cindy’s heart, WE THANK YOU ALL so much for the GENEROUS gifts!!  We will have many date nights!!

When I became ScoutMaster, I had no idea what I was doing or what to expect.  I can’t thank enough all the leaders who helped me along the way during my journey – there are too many to name for fear of missing someone, but you know who you are and I thank you deeply for all the support you have given me throughout my journey.

My goal from the beginning was to help the boys grow into independent young men and to give them every opportunity available to rank up through Scouts.  Another goal was to give them that nugget of experience and truth so that maybe one day, when they are facing a challenge they could maybe say “oh yeah, I remember….”

As leaders, we may not always see the end result in our Scouts, but planting that seed is what we are called to do.  In the bible it says:

Proverbs 22:6 NLT  New Living Translation

“Teach your children to choose the right path, and when they are older, they will remain upon it.”

And that has been one of my versus as ScoutMaster.   We may not see the end result, but as leaders and parents,  it is our duty to keep planting those seeds so that one day, they may take root and grow.

Again, THANK YOU ALL, for all the love and support you have given me during my journey.  It’s truly been an Honor and a Privilege to help lead this troop for the past almost 9 years and I look forward to still doing my part in helping our Scouts grow into fine young men.

Thank You,

Mr. Piel
