    July 2019 Scrip Order 

    Hello Troop 821,

    Last week the troop was at summer camp and I forgot to collect the July Scrip orders.

    We will place an order this week. If you would like to order scrip card this month, please print and complete the attached form and drop it off  with the payment at my house, 9901 Affton Pl  Please let me know with a text or a call at 314-443-1658 if you plan to drop off an order. I will take order up to Saturday, July 20th. The order will be placed on July 21st.

    Philmont 2020 

    Hello Troop 821,

    At the parents’ meeting last Thursday, we announced the BIG news about next summer! Troop 821 has a 12-day expedition slot for the BSA’s Philmont Scout Ranch. The expedition starts on Sunday, June 21st, 2020 and finishes on Friday, July 3rd, 2020. The expedition will be a back-country hike through Philmont’s mountainous wilderness.  This expedition is not the troop’s week-long summer camp. The troop will still attend summer camp at a yet to be determined out-of-council BSA camp.

    The expedition slot will remain available to us until mid-July 2019. To keep the slot, we need commitments from at least 3 more scouts by July 5th, 2019.   This commitment will require the $100 down payment payable to troop 821 by July 5th.

    The expedition requires 2-3 leaders and 5 to 6 scouts. 3 leaders (Micky Beadle, Chris Burford, and I) and 3 scouts have signed up. If  3 more scouts join the crew, then we can “lock-in” the reservation.

    Please look over the following information and talk to your son about going to Philmont. Be sure the dates do not interfere with other commitments (sports, camps, family trips, etc). The fees are non-refundable. I have a plan which could reduce our groups financial risk, but there will still be a risk of losing the fees paid.

    Scout Requirements

    • Scouts need to be 14 years old OR 13 years old and completed 8th grade by 6/21/2020.
    • Philmont strictly enforces the height/weight requirements for youth and adults to benefit the health and safety of participants. Click here to view the Philmont Risk Advisory/Height & Weight Requirements.
    • Scouts should be physically fit enough to carry 35 to 50 pounds of gear, food and water each day on the hike.

    What to expect:

    • About Philmont: https://www.philmontscoutranch.org/about/
    • Training and conditioning for the expedition – Each participant will be required to train on their own time and participate in weekend group hikes in preparation of the expedition.
    • Gear – Each Scout and Leader will be responsible for bringing their own gear. We will review all gear requirements as we prepare over the next 12 months.
    • Transportation to Philmont – We take the train from Kirkwood, MO on 6/20/20 to Raton, NM and return to Kirkwood on 7/4/20. We will take a bus to and from base camp.
    • Expedition Itinerary – The camp offers over 35 different hiking itineraries. The scouts will choose one that best meets their expectations prior to arriving at camp.
    • The Expedition – The crew will stay at base camp the first night then hit the trail on day two. The crew will stick to the itinerary for the hike and return on day 13. The crew will leave for home on day 14. Food and water will be provided to the crew while on expedition.

    Estimated total cost per person:

    $1025   12-Day Trek ($100 Deposit/$462.50 Sept2019/$462.50 Feb2019)
    $  280    Round trip Train ticket fee (estimate)
    $    45    Bus fare
    $  150    Travel meals, souvenirs, etc
    $1500    Estimated total

        I will add Will to the list. If we have 7-8 scouts sign up then we will need 1 more adult leader. I will put you down as the 4th leader.

    Thursday, January 10th Meeting

    Please bring your books to be reviewed/signed off for rank advancement. My goal is to have Scoutmaster Conferences and Board of Reviews for eligible Scouts on

    We will also practice the knots required for the Scout Rank: Square knot, two half-hitches and a taunt-line hitch. At the cross over camping, we will work with the new Scouts to help them learn these knots.

    Before the end of the meeting, I would like to complete Family Life by quickly reviewing some of the requirements.

    January 17th meeting – We will start the Collections Merit Badge. Please be thinking of your collection.

    Saturday, January 26th – Klondike – We will talk about this at the meeting.

    (Day event only – ends at 3:00 pm)

    Meet at the Admin building at 7:30 to carpool to Beaumont. Klondike is in Lane field.
    We need to register by 8:30 as a Troop
    Cost is $7.00 per person. (Cash by January 24)

    Weekly update 12/31/18 


    We will resume our Thursday meetings this Thursday, January 3.  It will be a planning meeting for the rest of the school year.  Gentlemen, please bring ideas of what you would like to do.

    The Winter Banquet on December 16th. All the information is on the Shawnee Lodge website where you can sign up NOW. This event will fill up so you must pre-register and this includes those of you who purchased the Lodge Season Passes. This is a great annual gathering for our Lodge so please join us.
