    Important Summer Camp Update

I was saddened to learn that Philmont has made the difficult decision to only open after July 1 and the Trek has been canceled. I know our Scouts and leaders were looking forward to this amazing adventure. https://www.philmontscoutranch.org/coronavirus/

For the Scouts that were going to Philmont, Kia Kima does offer high adventure/older Scout Programs. Please look at the Leader Guide. They also have an excellent Merit Badge Program and offer some Merit Badges that GSLAC does not. (Merit Badges are on Page 69) We are going Week 5: July 5 – 11. The first deposit is $50. However, as stated below, Scouts do not have to pay beyond the deposit until we are at camp. I do need to know who is interested in going to Kia Kima. Please contact me either via email (laura.e.tague@sbcglobal.net or text 314-973-9437)

Presently, we are still planning to host Scouts BSA Resident Camp on schedule, though this may change. If we are able to hold Scout camp, we will have numerous policies and procedures in place that prioritize the health and safety of our Scouts, leaders, and staff. We are working to source and secure personal protective equipment; to establish and implement prescreening measures; to effectively implement social distancing for all camp activities; and to modify program elements to ensure a great-and-safe Scouting experience. In order to ensure that we are doing everything possible to create a safe environment at camp, we will share details of these plans, including expectations for Scouts and leaders, in advance of your stay.
Because of the uncertainty surrounding camp this season, no per-Scout payments will be due prior to camp; all payments may be made at check-in at camp. If a Scout is unable to attend or we are unable to open camp, this will make the refund process less onerous and time-consuming for all. If you have already placed any per-Scout deposits, we will still be happy to transfer or refund those monies. As we said previously, we are committed to being flexible, so Scouts and leaders can be added or removed from your registration up until you arrive at camp. If you have any specific questions related to your troop’s stay at camp, please do not hesitate to reach out to us!

    Summer Camp

At this time, Summer camp is still in the works. The absolute last date to submit a deposit or intention of your Scout attending is Friday, May 1. The deposit is $50.

After all deposits are made, I will post the Merit Badge choices for Summer Camp.

National is still working on Part C, the physical/doctor’s signature needed for summer camp. They understand that many doctors are not seeing patients for physicals and are working on a solution.

    Update from National on Camping

I added a PDF on High Adventure Base.

One of the things addressed is Part C for the Annual medical forms. I am watching for updates as we get closer to May 1.

BSA Annual Health and Medical Record We are evaluating all options while being mindful of those who have valid exams as well as those new members and adults who may have never completed a Part C exam, state and local authority requirements, and the special review required by high adventure programs. In the interim, we recommend that council heath supervisors, camp staff and volunteers begin a conversation on local availability of well exams and alternatives that could be put in place.

    Virtual Troop Meetings!

I found out that I have Google Hangout Meets via my work. We would like to start having virtual Troop Meetings. Now, here is the hard part. We need to get the meeting out to the Scouts in a secure way.
I have posted the link in the Troop Google Classroom. The code is atwgebg If you let your Scouts know the code, they know how to join a class.

    National Update

National has published new Scouting guidelines for Rank Advancement. These are temporary until we are able to have meetings in person. I will be posting the rank requirements for Second Class and First Class in the Google Classroom. https://www.scouting.org/coronavirus/covid-19-faq/?fbclid=IwAR3j-Og4_AjtC7Pn5AzRcLh2ZfwcesuYJzSpTKeZx68Hw_gpUrEEaXGkWX0

    Update

Unfortunately, we are in limbo at this time. There are still things that Scouts can do at home for advancement and Merit Badges.
This is a good time for Scouts to learn the Outdoor Code, Oath and Law if they already don’t know them.

While we don’t have access to the Troop Library, if a Scout needs a Merit Badge book, let me know. Scouts can look at their books and work on rank requirements. Parents CAN NOT sign off on requirements. If there are any questions, please let me know.

This is my source for the Merit Badge Worksheets – http://usscouts.org/mb/worksheets/list.asp

I do need to know who is going to Summer Camp at Kia Kima in Arkansas. If you have not given me a deposit, please talk to your Scout. I get that some of the Scouts do not like the canvas tents. I do not want that to hold any Scout back from attending. We will make sure that there are Troop tents with us.

I am attempting to get Scoutbook functioning for our Troop. If you have an account at my.scouting.org, please let me know. If you don’t have one, please create one.

Again, I did create a Google Classroom for the Troop. The code is atwgebg I am working on instructions for two neckerchief slides using paracord and will post in the Classroom when done.

    Update during School Closure

We have all received the notice from our School District that school is closed until April 22nd. Since we meet in Mesnier, and groups larger than 10 people can’t gather, we are unable to hold meetings. As soon as St. Louis County allows for larger groups to gather, we will find a park to meet in.

I received an email from Kia Kima. They have extended the $50 first deposit to May 8. I need to know if your Scout wants to attend Summer Camp, but you have not given me the deposit. (There are some Scouts that don’t like the green tents. We will be bringing several Troop Tents. I do not want to have Scouts not attend Summer Camp.)

From our District Director – Summer Camps and other Events: As of right now, our summer camps are still on along with our Spring Camporee and ScoutFest 2020. None of the other cancellations apply to our summer camp programs and events occurring beyond the closure period of APRIL 5th. The Council will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Our PLC chose to go to a different GSLAC Camp for that weekend in April. I fully understand the Scouts want to camp. I want to camp. If they do open camps, Troop Leadership will have to evaluate if we do camp that weekend. My worry is having enough food for 15 people.

I encourage Scouts to work on Merit Badges and Rank Requirements. Have your Scout look at the requirements for their next rank. I have posted a 30 Day Second Class Challenge here and will post it in the Troop Google Classroom. Remember, parents can’t sign off on the Rank Requirements. Once the Troop is meeting again, we will have the PLC sign off.

I am working on adding presentations for Communication and Citizenship in the Community to the Troop Google Classroom. Once I have updated them, I will let everyone know..

    On-line Merit Badges

I have been working on ways to keep Scouts engaged during this downtime. I created a Google Classroom – code atwgebg I also added the Cyber Chip Requirements that our First Year Scouts need to complete.

This isn’t just for the Scouts! Parents, please go to Google Classroom and use the code to be added as a student.

I have added the Merit Badges that I am a counselor for and am adding Mr. Kirk’s. While we can’t meet in person, I have no problem with Scouts submitting information to me via Google Docs or Sheets.

From Mr. Kirk’s FB Post –

Hey all, I can do online MB sessions soon. I need to reactivate my Skype. But if you have google duo or FB messenger you can reach me that way.. I dont conform to iPhones and that facetime stuff. Anyways I am a counselor for coin collecting, collections, personal management and scouting heritage

    Troop Update

By now, everyone has heard that Affton has closed schools until April 3rd. With the City and County limiting groups gathering to 50 people, I am guessing that on Monday we will receive notice that the GSLAC camps have also closed beyond the 10 days. We have an away meeting on March 26th at Epic 6 in Fenton. At this time, it is up in the air based on if they will be open.

If you HAVE NOT made the deposit for Summer Camp and your Scout is going, I NEED TO KNOW. Please either email me or text me.

I know the Scouts will have on-line learning for school. There are some Merit Badges they can work on at home. To make this easier, I have created a Google Classroom for the Troop. The code is atwgebg. I encourage the Scouts to join (parents too).

I have uploaded the Merit Badge Workbooks for Art, Citizenship in the World and Family Life. With Citizenship in the World, Scouts need to pick a country and research it. They can create a Google Slide and share it with me.
